From Survival to Living: The Raw Science of Somatic Regulation

I’m sitting on my porch in Kernville, looking at the mountains. They don’t have an agenda. They aren’t "manifesting" a better version of themselves or trying to heal their inner child. They just exist, rooted in the earth, unaffected by the noise of the world. It’s a perspective I’ve spent a lifetime acquiring, usually from the floor of my life rather than a textbook.
When you’ve survived a violent household, found yourself homeless at fifteen, and spent years navigating the jagged edges of compulsive loops and supporting the body’s natural regulation alongside Bipolar I, you lose your taste for fluff. You don’t want "love and light"; you want to know why your heart is hammering in your chest for no reason. You want to know why your body feels like it’s made of lead one day and live-wire the next.
That is what I call the energetic cost of survival.
Most people are participants in a life they don’t actually live; they just manage the symptoms of their past. But there is a shift: one I experienced in 2012: where survival ends and actual living begins. It isn't a hallucination; it is a realization of Self. And the bridge to that shift is built with the rigorous, raw science of somatic regulation.
The Intelligence of Hypervigilance
We often treat our "issues": be it anxiety, chronic pain, or mood swings: as character flaws. They aren't. They are data. My experience with Fibromyalgia wasn't a "glitch" in the system; it was the nervous system’s way of saying it had been holding the weight of the world for too long.
Hypervigilance is essentially an overactive security system. If you were homeless at fifteen, like I was, that security system was a godsend. It kept me alive. But when the threat is gone and the alarm keeps ringing, it becomes a cage.
In mechanics-focused terms, this often reflects the body’s response to high-stress patterns and its interplay with the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). When the system stays stuck in a high-arousal state, the body pays a tax. That tax is often paid in chronic inflammation, digestive issues, and the "human messiness" of erratic moods.

The Vagus Nerve: The Mechanics of Being Stuck
To understand how to move from survival to living, you have to understand the Vagus Nerve. This isn’t a "woo-woo" concept; it is the longest cranial nerve in your body, the "air traffic controller" of your internal state.
The Vagus nerve is the primary component of the parasympathetic nervous system: the part that tells you it’s safe to rest, digest, and actually connect with another human being without checking for the nearest exit.
The Cost of Dysregulation
When the nervous system is dysregulated, particularly in those of us supporting the body’s natural regulation alongside Bipolar I or carrying a history of high-stress patterns, we tend to oscillate between two extremes:
Sympathetic Dominance (Fight or Flight): Characterized by mania, anxiety, racing thoughts, and a body that refuses to shut down.
Dorsal Vagal Shutdown (Freeze): Characterized by depression, dissociation, numbness, and the leaden fatigue of Fibromyalgia.
For years, I lived in the space between these two fires. Most of us do because we’ve been taught to lie to ourselves about how we actually feel. We use logic to solve a physiological problem. You cannot "think" your way out of a survival response. You have to regulate your way out.
At The House of Balance, our Signature Nervous System Reset and Vagal Nerve Stimulation are designed to speak the language the body actually understands: frequency, movement, and somatic safety.
Why We Lie to Ourselves
Humans are the only animals that will walk into a room, feel a distinct "no" in their gut, and stay for three hours anyway because they don't want to be "rude." We lie to ourselves about our boundaries, our needs, and our history.
This internal dishonesty creates a "split" in the self. We try to live a "classy" life while our nervous system is still screaming in the gutter. The work of somatic healing is about closing that gap. It’s about having a fierce respect for the unknown and unseen forces that run the show under the surface.
When I finally got sober in 2010, I realized that dependency patterns were just a very expensive, very destructive way to regulate a nervous system I didn't understand. Once you stop the games, you’re left with the raw data of your existence. That’s where the "great collective adventure" actually begins.

From Survival to Actual Living: The 2012 Shift
In 2012, I had a realization of Self that shifted everything. It wasn't a sudden "fix," but rather a dissolution of the form. I stopped seeing myself as a collection of traumas and diagnoses and started seeing myself as a participant in the universe: formless, yet grounded.
This is the goal of our RTT Hypnotherapy sessions: to rewire the subconscious so it stops running the "survival" script. We don't just "talk" about the past; we go in and change the internal mechanisms that keep you lying to yourself about your worth and your potential.
Practical Steps for Somatic Regulation
Healing shouldn't be another chore on your to-do list. If you’re managing work, family, and the general absurdity of the modern world, you need tools that actually work without an energetic cost you can’t afford.
Here are a few ways to start the process of Nervous System Regulation:
Vagal Toning: Simple acts like humming, gargling, or cold water splashes on the face can physically stimulate the Vagus nerve.
Somatic Grounding: Instead of "meditating" (which can be hard if your brain is a hornet's nest), simply notice three things you can feel against your skin. The chair. The breeze. Your feet on the floor.
Low-Impact Movement: For those with Fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue, "pushing through" is a death sentence for progress. Focus on Low-Impact Movement Support that prioritizes circulation over exertion.
Naturopathic Support: Sometimes the "stuckness" is chemical. A Naturopathy Consult can help identify the deficiencies that keep your system in a state of high alarm.
The Future of Holistic Restoration
We are moving toward a future where the bridge between ancient wisdom and modern science is no longer a "niche" interest. It is a necessity. The more digital and disconnected our lives become, the more we will crave the "Grounded Elegance" of somatic work.
The future of healing isn't about "fixing" what is broken. It’s about recognizing that you were never broken to begin with: you were just extremely well-adapted to survive a world that didn't deserve your gentleness.

You Are the Participant
If you’ve spent your life waiting for the other shoe to drop, it’s time to realize the shoe has already fallen, and you’re still here. You’ve survived the fire. Now, the question is: what are you going to do with the "actual living" part?
Start with just five minutes of awareness. No platitudes, no empty "love and light." Just you, your breath, and the data of your own body. If you're ready to stop surviving and start participating, I’m here to help you navigate the terrain.
Explore our Holistic Wellness Practices and see which path resonates with your soul's need for deep restoration.
The mountains aren't going anywhere. Neither are you. It’s time to sit on the porch and finally take a look at the view.
